Untold is Romania’s biggest electronic music festival and has been a recipient of the Best Major Festival at the European Festival Awards.

Inaugurated in 2015, the festival is organized by SHARE Federation Cluj-Napoca, a non-profit government institution.

The festival takes place at the Cluj Arena – a multipurpose stadium – in the city of Cluj-Napoca, west Romania. It is an annual festival taking place in the first week of August.

Untold is a widely anticipated event, bringing together the top DJs of the world.

Festival-goers come from all around the world for the electronic music played by roaring names such as David Guetta and Major Lazer.

As a four-day event with 10 stages, Untold is a diverse go-to festival for anybody and everybody.

Here’s everything you need to know about Untold.

The first Untold festival was a huge success

Established in 2015, this open-air festival has been attracting crowds from all over the world with stunning stage design, top-tier lineup and foot-tapping beats.

Go big or go home seems to have been the Untold first edition motto. Although it can be considered a rookie festival due to its rather recent launch, Untold brought names such as Avicii, Wu-Tang Clan, and Armin Van Buuren to its stages.

Bringing over 240,000 people and around €240 million in revenue, Untold’s Chapter 1 was a hit from the get-go.

Untold has won more than one award

During the seven years in which Untold has been an integral part of the live music industry, the festival made waves. And when it comes to awards, Untold’s restlessness when it comes to being the best hasn’t passed by unnoticed.

In the aftermath of its inauguration, Untold won two awards – the Best Major Festival award from the European Festival Awards and the Brand of the Year award from the International Advertising Association Romania.

Many famous artists have showcased their talents at this festival

Chapter 2 of Untold had Tiësto take over the stage, Chapter 3 saw Ellie Goulding hype up the crowds, while Chapter 4 hosted Alesso, The Chainsmokers and Diplo.

What we are trying to say is that Untold masters the art of scoring blue-blooded acts. A pro at creating eclectic lineups with some of the most coveted artists, the festival never disappoints when it comes to lineup announcements.

Music fans seem to agree with that statement. Every year, the music celebration sees 370,000 ticket holders getting immersed into music beats, cherishing their beloved music hero and raving until sunrise.

Untold has become an international ambassador

Untold festival became an international ambassador for Romania and Transylvania in 2016.

The very same bracelet that allows people to attend the festival also opens tourism opportunities across the country. Bracelet holders can access popular tourist attractions, such as the Bran Castle, for free or at a discounted price.

In 2016, Romania was named the no. 1 must-see destination by Lonely Planet.

The festival attracts over 300,000 people

Untold had 300,000 attendees at the festival in 2016 – about 10% of this crowd was international. The General Inspectorate for Immigration in Cluj said that an approximate 30,000 foreigners entered Romania for Untold.

Untold sold out in record time in 2018 (twice)

The first 15,000 tickets – the early birds released at the beginning of November – sold out in less than three minutes according to Romanian media outlets.

The second batch of tickets was sold on the 20th of November. In less than 10 minutes, there was not even one left – is anybody else getting Tomorrowland ticket booking vibes?

If you’re planning to get tickets for the next edition, we recommend keeping an eye on when ticket releases.

The party never stops at Untold

Yeah, all-night raves are cool, but nothing beats a festival that blasts music almost non-stop.

It’s easy to forget about catching some Zs at Untold – especially since the Romanian festival offers over 100 hours of continuous music. More than 150 artists gather each year to keep the festival alive 24 hours a day.

When you need a proper break from the music beats, Untold offers a bunch of on-site activities, such as face painting.

There’s no camping at Untold, but guests can choose accommodation in the city

Set in Central Park Simion Bărnuțiu, Cluj-Napoca, it is easy to walk to any other location in the city from the festival.

Because it is so conveniently located, Untold doesn’t feature your traditional camping. Instead, it lets you go on a discovery journey for central hotels, hostels and Airbnbs.

The festival is about more than just music

In 2017, Untold festival had set up 2 light installations amongst other art at the venue. Rotifors by Nicole Anona Banowtez and Talking Heads by Viktor Vicsek captured the attention of Untold’s audience.

Untold took its music celebrations on the Mediterranean Sea

In 2021, Untold organised Odyssey, a cruise that was billed as a Discovery of Wonder.

It was set to be an all-inclusive epic party on the Mediterranean Sea. As the best DJs in the world played their sets, festival-goers on board were spoilt for choice with facilities such as a spa, a casino, a bowling alley, and an art gallery.
