With a devoted population of electronic music fans all across the globe, it is no surprise that there has been a demand for a festival of this stature beyond the US. The 2013 edition of the festival was marred by tragedy when two of the festival attendees passed out and later died. After two successful days of concerts, the third day of the 2013 edition was canceled after the two festival-goers died from hyperthermia and an MDMA overdose during the festival.

Following the tragedy, authorities and citizens were up in arms against the issuance of permits for such events. Electric Zoo expressed their regret but made assurances of greater safety and security measures at its events in future.

8. The festival is known to give back

In 2010, Randall’s Island Sports Foundation and the Bronx Museum launched FLOW, an outdoor art exhibition project. This project was successfully launched with the help of Made Event and the Rockefeller NYC Cultural Innovation Fund. Electric Zoo contributed to the event’s success by donating US$2 to the project from every ticket sold at its 2011 edition.

9. Electric Zoo is environmentally conscious

The large festival has had a great impact not only on its fans but also on the environment. In 2011, the festival introduced an on-site recycling system for waste and water in cardboard containers, biodegradable plates, and utensils. Electric Zoo also switched to using 100% biodiesel alternative fuel and forced all food vendors to source only organic, hormone-free, ethically bred livestock.
