The 2013 edition of the festival was marred by tragedy when two of the festival attendees passed out and later died. After two successful days of concerts, the third day of the 2013 edition was canceled after the two festival-goers died from hyperthermia and an MDMA overdose during the festival.

Following the tragedy, authorities and citizens were up in arms against the issuance of permits for such events. Electric Zoo expressed their regret but made assurances of greater safety and security measures at its events in future.

9. Electric Zoo is environmentally conscious

The large festival has had a great impact not only on its fans but also on the environment. In 2011, the festival introduced an on-site recycling system for waste and water in cardboard containers, biodegradable plates, and utensils.
