Electric Picnic is a famous arts-and-music festival that outdoes itself each year with glorious lineups and impressive activities.

The festival was inaugurated in 2004, founded by music promoters Robbie Butler and John Reynolds.

The annual festival has been taking place at the lush fields of Stradbally Hall, south-west of Dublin in Ireland in the first week of September.

Electric Picnic draws a large crowd of youngsters with a great music mix of indie, alternative, and dance music.

1. The festival was born in 1998

Electric Picnic is a mega rock n’ roll gala. Many local and international artists have performed on Electric Picnic’s stage throughout the years.

Lana Del Rey, Sam Smith, Hozier, and Blur are a few of the top musicians who have graced the stage at the festival. The Chemical Brothers, Massive Attack, Duran Duran are some of the distinguished names who have headlined the event in the past.

2. Electric Picnic has been compared to top festivals worldwide

Electric Picnic has left a remarkable impression on the festival industry worldwide and has earned its place among leading festivals.

In 2009, the Managing Director of Festival Republic, Melvin Benn claimed that Electric Picnic is “Ireland’s version of Glastonbury” and “a great inspiration to Latitude too”.

3. Electric Picnic is more than just a music festival

Electric Picnic offers an immersive experience that includes theater, music, comedy, and cook-offs by Michelin Star chefs such as Ross Lewis and Derry Clarke who joined the 2015 edition of the festival.

4. Electric Picnic invites you to dance all night long

Nothing beats the thrill of dancing all night to your favorite music. This is what Electric Picnic is all about.

The festival site is home to two different areas – the Late Night Arena and the Main Arena.

Throughout the festival, the Late Night Arena remains open till 04:00 AM while the Main Arena closes at midnight on Friday and Sunday, and at 2 AM on Saturday.

6. The festival has earned several awards

Throughout the years, Electric Picnic has succeeded in standing out among other festivals of its kind. Hosting some top-tier musicians every year, it is no surprise that Electric Picnic received the ‘Best Lineup Award’ at the Irish Festival Awards in 2011.

It earned the Best Medium-Sized European Festival award at the European Festival Awards in 2010. Additionally, it has been voted ‘Best Big Festival’ several times at the Irish Festival Awards.

7. Electric Picnic released a documentary about the festival in 2022

After a two-year hiatus, Electric Picnic returned with a documentary called A Piece of the Picnic, which premiered on RTÉ 2FM’s YouTube channel on March 6, 2022. A Piece of the Picnic features a look back at the previous two years, when the festival did not happen, keeping people excited for the return of music, arts, and free-spirited revelry at the Picnic this year.

This documentary was filmed over the past two summers by a group of festival organizers and artists. Its main purpose was to “give audiences a flavor of some of the most-loved elements of Ireland’s largest gathering of music and arts.”

8. Amnesty International joined the 2008 festival edition

In 2008, Amnesty International joined the festival to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. During the edition, the Temple of Truth, built by David Best, a renowned American sculptor, was carried out on site.

The Temple of Truth was a 55-foot wooden construction that featured an architectural mix between the Eiffel Tower and a Buddhist temple. The temple was planned to be set on fire at the end of the festival by some of those who have been affected by Irish male suicide.

9. Electric Picnic tickets sell out in the blink of an eye

Those who are interested in joining this unique event should make sure to get their tickets several weeks in advance.

10. Electric Picnic 2022 ticket holders are in luck

Due to COVID-19, the festival’s 2020 and 2021 editions were both canceled. The organizers offered all ticket holders an option of receiving a full refund including booking fees.

The great news is that those who chose to keep their 2020 tickets for the 2021 edition, which also got canceled, will be able to join Electric Picnic 2022.

After having been absent for two years, Electric Picnic is back in action to guarantee festival-goers a transformative art and music experience, with an outstanding line-up and a range of entertainment activities.
