AMF (Amsterdam Music Festival) is one of EDM’s biggest nights of the year.

Internationally known DJs are a common sight at this festival, as AMF brings in the biggest names in the world to Amsterdam. Some artists that have performed here are Alesso, Steve Angello, DJ Snake, David Guetta and Armin van Buuren.

Here’s everything you need to know about AMF.

1. AMF began in 2013

ID&T and ALDA, two huge players in the Dutch dance industry, came together to create the very first edition of AMF.

The festival took place in Rai Amsterdam with around 30 of the world’s best DJs performing in three areas. Hardwell, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Alesso were just a part of the impressive lineup at AMF’s first edition.

2. AMF festival is a part of Amsterdam Dance Event

The Amsterdam Dance Event has been an annual gathering of the electronic music industry since 1996. Over the span of five days and nights, Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) hosts over 1,000 events in 200 locations, which includes AMF at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

3. The festival grew quickly after its success in 2013

2014 marked the first year that AMF was set in Johan Cruijff ArenA (also called Amsterdam ArenA, being the largest stadium in Amsterdam), and it only grew from there

In 2015, the AMF extended the festivities to two nights and it became the number one event in the whole ADE. 2016 had the largest edition of AMF yet, with performances spread over five separate days in three different locations: Heineken Music Hall, Johan Cruijff ArenA and Ziggo Dome.

4. AMF’s lineups have consistently been star-studded

AMF has been bringing some of the most popular DJs of our time since its inception. 

Armin van Buuren, David Guetta and Don Diablo are huge names in the industry who have repeatedly come back to perform for AMF fans. Other DJs include Tiësto, Timmy Trumpet, Avalan and The Chainsmokers.

5. Two of the hottest names in music came together for the first time ever

Armin van Buuren and Hardwell performed together for the very first time at AMF in 2017. The two performers did this as part of a new event at the festival called #TwoIsOne.

Nicky Romero and Afrojack are another pair of DJs that had never performed together prior to taking part in AMF’s #TwoIsOne.

6. AMF works in collaboration with DJ Mag

Every year at this festival, DJ Mag’s Top 100 DJs Awards crown the number one DJ in the world. Hardwell won two consecutive years in 2013 and 2014. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Martin Garrix have also won it multiple times before David Guetta snagged the title in 2020, maintaining his victory until today.

7. The AMF festival broke records in 2019

AMF’s 2019 edition was the most successful one of all, according to ALDA CEO Allan Hardenberg. More than 40,000 fans flocked to Johan Cruijff ArenA from over 100 countries, breaking previous attendance records of the festival. Tickets to the festival were also sold out at record breaking speed.

At this edition, DJ Mag’s top DJ award was given to Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike.

8. The 2020 edition of AMF went virtual

AMF, like many other live events, was not able to take place in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Forced to get creative to find a solution, the festival’s organizers came up with AMF.tv, and they made this available to anyone from around the world who wanted to tune in.

It was a huge success, bringing in over seven million fans from more than 120 different countries to the platforms AMF.tv, djmag.tv and other channels.
