2014 witnessed the grand opening of Au Lounge at the edge of Oakland Ave – Harrison St, north of Oakland’s Downtown.
The nightclub named after the chemical element gold is a real treasure. The interior is black, with popping African artwork and pictures of musicians on one wall.
On the outside, it is also a black canvas with beautiful graffiti blending Africa’s map, a black woman in traditional clothes, and symbols from Africa like the Egyptian Eye of Horus. Au Lounge has a small wooden patio for a chill night in the fresh air.
The club celebrates African heritage through its music, playing reggae, afrobeats, afro-house, tribal, and Habesha. You can hear other genres of music like hip-hop, rock, cumbia, soul, and Latin music.
The nightclub is a champion of art as it doubles as an art gallery, showcasing art pieces by local artists. Au Lounge holds poetry slams for up-and-coming Shakespeares of the era.
Afrofusion nights are on another level, with Egyptian folk dance Tanoura shows and performances with elaborate, flashy costumes; Au Lounge outdoes itself.
From African spiced-up dishes to beats from the motherland, Au Lounge earns its name fair and square.
