Comptoir Darna was born from its founder’s nostalgia

We are back in time to the 90s – Comptoir Darna came to life, changing the city’s nightlife scene forever. As the brainchild of renowned Algerian entrepreneur Marcel Chiche, the nightlife temple was brought to life in 1999.

Born and raised in Chlef, Chiche had strong ties with his homeland, family, and culture.

When he set foot on Parisian grounds for the first time at 13, Marcel didn’t know that golden rendezvous, starry evenings, and views over the Seine would make him feel at home.

Following numerous ventures in the nightlife realm, the entrepreneur decided to open a trendy restaurant in Paris called Le Comptoir.

During his hunt for a more serene outpost, the globetrotter fell head over heels for Marrakesh. He decided to open Comptoir Darna, a restaurant-meets-nightclub venue.

During the first year, Marcel was always behind the decks, spinning music on the second floor.

Instead of greeting customers on the dinner-and-shows floor, he wanted to keep the crowds hyped up with beats.

Thanks to his bicultural identity and previous experiences, Marcel realized that going to the same restaurant for the first and second time would be exciting – but the third time would get boring.

He believed that offering more than one cuisine and bringing an energetic atmosphere would keep visitors coming back for more. That was precisely the recipe for success – striking a balance between a finger-licking gastronomical experience and clubbing.

The nightclub found shelter in Marrakesh’s wealthy center

Nestled in a buzzing and affluent residential neighborhood surrounded by greenery, Comptoir Darna is located in L’Hivernage District, Marrakesh’s heart.

Unlike other famed Moroccan areas, L’Hivernage is far from having the typical hustle and bustle street vibe. Lacking older cities’ cultural appeal, the district is characterized by broad avenues lined by palm trees and modern architecture.

Although Marrakesh is a historical city dating back to the 11th century, L’Hivernage is relatively new, as its foundations were laid in 1928. The Moroccan district became a sunny oasis during winter and a haven for French diplomats seeking balmy destinations.

If you haven’t figured it out, this is where L’Hivernage – the French word for wintering – got its name.

Brimming with grand villas and luxury hotels, the district soon became a playground for European movie stars, French music-hall celebrities, and a regular stop for the post-war jet set.

If you’re an avid lover of tourist of century-old Moroccan cities, this district isn’t your cup of tea.

When the sun sets, it becomes a vibrant area brimming with nightlife hotspots, cocktail bars, dance clubs, and stylish international restaurants.

Aside from those clichés, L’Hivernage offers views, tastes, and sensations that no other Moroccan area can match. Between its red murals, high-end restaurants featuring traditional and international cuisine make Dubai’s Michelin-star restaurants green-eyed.

Offering panoramic views of the High Atlas – North Africa’s highest mountain – the chic and modern L’Hivernage is one of Marrakesh’s go-to luxury destinations.

Comptoir Darna revives One Thousand and One Nights aesthetics

Falling under the cachet of typical Arabesque places, Comptoir Darna embodies the authentic Moroccan spirit.

The nightclub is a work of art housed inside an all-red establishment dating from the 1950s. Featuring a massive Islamic door with vector art and luxurious red curtains creating a hallway, Comptoir Darna gives off Raspoutine Paris vibes but makes it contemporary.

When you set foot inside, you will sense the club’s boldness, with red and black being the predominant colors.

By including different rooms in its blueprint, the two-story Comptoir Darna Marrakesh has an intimate aura with a 500-capacity.

A concoction of glamor and luxury, Comptoir Darna’s ground floor spans a dimly-lit restaurant and a cozy terrace to dine under the stars.

A grandiose flight of stairs will lead you to the club, adorned with traditional Moroccan lanterns.

Lighting is essential to Moroccan interior design since it can alter any space’s style. Comptoir Darna strongly emphasizes it, as the nightlife hub features subdued lighting in shades of red, orange, and yellow to create a warm atmosphere.

As you might have noticed from the previous description, the clubbing destination can easily fall under the upscale clubbing category. Its unwavering attention to detail manifests in a red interior, velvet armchairs, candlelights, rich colors, plants, and decorative roses.

In a place where romantic lights reign supreme, the ambiance is cooled off by an open-air patio with fairytale-ish vibes.

With shining stars hanging from a tree, lush carpets, and patterned seatings, this place comes seems like an Aladdin movie.

The Moroccan club’s music repertoire is loyal to its roots

With a solid musical philosophy, the partying destination stays true to its origin. It plays Moroccan beats, making them more melodic, uplifting, and modern.

At Comptoir Darna Marrakesh, your clubbing session will be filled with a dinner-and-show concept, which includes entertainers, fire breathers, and dancers.

The nightclub boasts the ante with a live orchestra performing Moroccan classics and Gnawa bands, playing jazz, pop, and reggae.

It also boasts the recurrent Souktronic night, a musical concept and label combining raw, punchy, and tribal sounds inspired by the souks of Marrakesh.

Comptoir Darna’s upstairs section brings a new touch to Morroco’s nightlife scene, as it is home to electronic music.

Most of the club’s music heroes come from diverse musical backgrounds. Some specialize in deep house, others in ethnic house, and the rest in afro house.

Comptoir Darna forms a playground for the unsung DJs that, despite their low-kept profile, have honed their mixing skills for years. A considerable chunk of the DJs behind the decks are Morocco-born and bred musicians, like FNX Omar.

Comptoir Darna has the VIP treatment at its core

As a victim of its own fame, Comptoir Darna is usually jam-packed with elegant party-goers seeking a luxurious treatment.

Whether you opt for the restaurant, the patio, or the club, you will be guaranteed top-notch service, high-quality food, intimate booths, and refined drinks. While prices per person are not low considering the country’s average, patrons have to make early reservations to secure seats.

Showcasing an elegant blend of cultures, Comptoir Darna Marrakesh offers high-quality traditional Moroccan food and finger-licking international dishes.

As part of Comptoir Darna’s shows, not one but dozens of sequin-clad belly dancers descend the staircase, ready to spice the night up as they whirl around the dance floor.

Did anyone say hookah? Yes, you read that correctly. Hookah is an essential part of Morocco’s culture, and what’s better than relaxing and blowing off steam – and smoke – on the charming patio?

Comptoir Darna offers flavored hookah with aromatic flavours to make your Arabian experience complete.

The nightlife hotspot was a stronghold for A-list evenings

The Marrakech International Film Festival was first established in 2001 by Prince Moulay Rachid of Morocco.

Back then, Comptoir Darna Marrakesh was the only venue for formal evenings. Still fresh in business, the new kid on the block had charmed and seduced the festival’s organizers, who had designated it as a bastion of the event’s evenings and afterparties from 2001 to 2004.

As part of the renowned and important event, world-famous celebrities like Angelina Jolie, Naomi Campbell, Will Smith, Sean Connery, Nicole Kidman, Johnny Hallyday, and many other international personalities walked on Comptoir Darna’s red carpet.

Aside from witnessing its share of evenings with celebrities and influential personalities, the international club has also hosted birthday parties for A-listers such as American rapper Puff Daddy and British singer Rita Ora.

Comptoir Darna is open all year round

Comptoir Darna believes in the clubbing cult and thinks it should not be limited to the weekend. Unapologetically bold and proud of it, this clubbing destination is the only place in town where you can party every night of the week.

Whether it’s Monday or Saturday, the club will keep you entertained till late night hours, with events scheduled every day of the week.
